How tunnels under the Alps are helping Switzerland fight climate threats

Switzerland moved freight from roads to underground rail for environmental protection. This policy began after voters approved the Alpine Initiative in 1994. Massive tunnels now allow trains to bypass fragile mountain passes efficiently. Roughly three-quarters of Alpine freight now travels by rail. This infrastructure shift reduces pollution and noise for valley communities.
